Just days after her white wedding Anne Smith’s world came crashing down, turning into a long, dark, desert period. Soon after her marriage to a Special Forces officer, Anne, a woman who helped facilitate reintegration talks in Afghanistan, who is trained and wired to lean-in to conflict with the hope of reconciliation, found herself on the battleground of a lifetime. Her husband started to display symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), emotional and verbal abuse. Both their worlds crumbled. Every paradigm they knew shattered and every place of comfort was removed, leaving them grappling for truth. They broke.
For those longing for the courage to change their situation, Recalibrated relays Anne’s journey through the valley of darkness and into the light on the other side. This is a love story, but the heart of it is a war story. The war fought for love, for life, for purpose and identity. Writing from her perspective, Anne offers a guide on how she, and ultimately her marriage, overcame through faith, hope, and love. Anne openly shares her powerful testimony of how the Lord tenderly cares for the brokenhearted and loves to redeem broken relationships.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Anne W. Smith is first and foremost a broken, healing daughter of Christ, learning to walk in His way and sit at His feet. She is a woman called to promote peace, to encourage reconciliation and to spread the hope of redemption. Anne holds a Master’s degree in Conflict, Security & Development from King’s College, London, is a certified teacher and a trained family and civil mediator. She believes she is called to comfort others with the same comfort she herself has received. Anne resides in Richmond, Virginia with her beloved husband and children.
ABOUT THE BOOK
This book is not only about surviving actual war; it is also about surviving martial chaos. It teaches us forgiveness and humility. In time, we will all be in those places where it all seems too big and hopelessness creeps in . . . where we want to give up on a relationship—be that a spouse, a parent, or a friend.
Anne not only teaches us about the wounds of trauma, but she also teaches us about the beauty of healing, about looking in, and about looking up. She teaches us the importance of picking up our swords and fighting for love when all seems lost.
As you will read, Anne and Nelson’s journey of overcoming a marriage in shambles is one of whiteknuckle grit. It is a testimony of the power of surrender, humility, and reaching out for help. It shows us all how coming back to God, as our North Star, can lead us out of the trenches. One of my favorite parts of this story is that there were no miracle moments. Healing came slowly— by showing up to counseling sessions, small groups, and looking into the mirror.
This is a story of how two hopeless, broken people headed toward divorce crawled out of the pit one prayer at a time. How God took frayed edges and turned them into a tapestry for His glory.

“Suffer Strong” & “Hope Heals”
“Recalibrated is a resource I wish I had had forty years ago, when as a newly married rookie police officer I began the challenges of married life within the world of crime and punishment. It took years to find grace and beauty and safety in the bond of marriage. Anne’s brave story provides a hopeful path forward through what might seem a dark road.”
